Meet the SETBP1 Team – Prof Dr Simon Fisher
Next up in our Meet the SETBP1 Team series is Prof Dr Simon Fisher! He is a geneticist, neuroscientist and director of the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. Simon’s work attempts to bridge the gaps between genes, brains, speech and language, by integrating molecular findings with data from levels of analysis, including cell biology, experimental psychology, and neuroimaging. For one of his studies, his team is investigating the molecular biology of language-related genes, including SETBP1, and the proteins they encode, in order to uncover the functions of these proteins during normal brain development, and to reveal more about the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodevelopmental disorders. He was awarded a SETBP1 disorder grant from SETBP1 Society in 2019. Check out his interview where he talks about his interest in SETBP1 and other language-related genes, how he became interested in SETBP1, what he is excited about – research-wise!
